Marching Band

The Mayde Creek High School Mighty Ram Band is one of the most successful high school marching bands in the state of Texas. The marching band is part of a comprehensive music program and consists of over 200 students (winds, percussion, color guard, and drum majors). The band takes great pride in representing our school and our community by performing at all varsity football games, pep rallies, U.I.L. contest, and other contests and events. The marching band is open to any Mayde Creek High School student who has passed a proficiency audition. Auditions are held in the spring for instrumentalist and auxiliary personnel for the next fall semester. All marching band members must be enrolled in a band during the first semester.

All members of the Wind Symphony, Symphonic, Concert bands must participate in the marching band. Eligibility, attendance, participation, music proficiency, and marching abilities will be the determining factors in who performs. In the spring, incoming freshmen participate in a freshman band camp and orientation. The purpose of this camp is to teach basic marching fundamentals, and to prepare incoming freshmen students for assimilation into summer band rehearsals.

Summer band rehearsals begin approximately two weeks before school starts. Throughout the marching season, full marching band rehearsals are held after school. A brief run-through of the marching show will take place after school on game days. Additional rehearsals and/or sectionals may be scheduled by the director, to assist in teaching the music or the marching. The camps and rehearsals are all conducted under the strict rules of the University Interscholastic Leagues (UIL) guidelines, which governs how many hours the students can practice each week. UIL rules also maintain that every student must maintain a passing grade in all scholastic work in order to participate in the band. As such, the band program also encourages rigorous study habits and offers a tutoring for its participants.

Color Guard

The Mayde Creek High School Color Guard / Winter Guard is recognized acoss the state as an award winning group. During the fall season, the Color Guard travels and performs with the Mighty Ram Marching Band during halftime and at contests. The Color Guard is a non-musical section and provides the visual aspect of the performance, interpreting the music played by the band.

The Color Guard teaches movement to music incorporating flags, dance, rifles, sabers, costumes and props. The Color Guard also performs without the marching band. At the end of the marching season, Color Guard members prepare for their own indoor competitive season called Winter Guard. These highly skilled members develop skills by performing to recorded music, utilizing flags, dance, rifles, sabers, costumes and props.

In addition to the equipment-handling skills, members learn advanced movements, dance, and drama. Members need to request the 7th period Color Guard class. They earn P.E. credit for the fall semester and Fine Arts credit for the spring semester. Over the summer, there is a Guard camp and band camp two weeks before school starts where we learn our routines, fundamentals, and teamwork. If you plan on participating in the Color Guard and/or Winter Guard, be prepared to be flexible in your schedule.
